Oberon Autumn Colour Garden Showcase 2027

My husband Ray Sproats and I are the proud custodians of Essington Park, a garden, homestead and shearers quarters that was originally built in 1860. Over the past 30 years, we’ve transformed this place from a mere paddock into parkland, planting more than 200 trees and nurturing the lawns and hedges into what they are today. The front garden has a formal feel, while the back is shaped in a cottage style.

We have the original schoolhouse nestled in the garden, adorned with old world roses on the front veranda and a Zinnia and Iris garden just to its left. Ray and I also built a charming potting shed at the back of the old stables, which is now attached to our salad garden.

More recently, we restored the circa 1900 shearing shed, quarters and shearers mess, and added an organic orchard and vegetable garden to the area. I now run a cooking school, creative workshop and country stay in that space and love cooking for our guests straight from our garden.

The garden is by no means finished—it’s a work in progress, and we have plans to build an extensive glass house to grow citrus and extend our growing season. Essington Park and its garden brings us more joy and happiness than words can express.

We bought Spring Gully in 2008. It was 150 acres with no dwelling or garden. Our 5 acre house paddock was a blank canvas on which to build our solar passive house and surrounding garden. From 2010 trees (both native and exotic) were planted. After the house was built (2013) we started creating a garden. Neighbours, friends and family donated time and a variety of suitable plants. Every contribution was accepted gracefully and a place was found to suit. We love the well-defined seasons Oberon offers, so deciduous plants are a favourite. Spring Gully enjoys wonderful rural views as its backdrop and we are constantly finding more gardening opportunities to complement the scenery. With a very eclectic garden, comes bird life in abundance which we love.

Casper’s Cloud is set on 20 acres with its western boundary being the Fish River.  The 14 year old garden was a bare cow paddock with 1 lone poplar that now provides formal hedges, autumn colour avenues, vast amounts of cloud pruned shrubs and of course a river garden set on the banks of the Fish.   Equine infrastructure provides the bones of Casper’s with numerous spines of Ornamental Pears, Poplars, London Planes, Cypres and Maples.  Wander up to the house garden to take in the views, the rear walled garden, the chicken coop and new vegetable patch.
