The Mount Victoria and District Historical Society care for and present to the public the extraordinary collection of objects and exhibits housed at Mt Vic Museum, which is located in the sixteen rooms at the rear of the Mount Victoria Railway Station. The two-storey sandstone building was formerly the station’s refreshment room (1873) with upstairs accommodation, and includes supporting reception area, hallways, staircase and kitchen, which was an extension to the original single-storey station building.

The museum collection is a diverse and fascinating assemblage, with a variety of themed exhibits over the two floors. It includes a kitchen and scullery display, refreshment room tableware from the railway station heyday, the bed believed to belong to Kate Kelly, Ned Kelly’s sister, convict relics, settlers exhibits and much more.

A display to commemorate the bicentenary of the crossing of the Blue Mountains features sketches, paintings and artefacts depicting the work of the explorers, road builders, tradesmen and convicts.

The struggle of the settlers is shown by the nature of the tools and farm equipment, whose construction, use and maintenance required enormous physical effort. The display includes a large wooden horse-drawn buggy.

The changing domestic scene is illustrated by costume and accessories, pottery, historic railways tableware, musical instruments and furniture, including an 1899 silk wedding dress.

Development of the area as a tourism destination and industries such as mining are also depicted. Displays and information on unique local schools are a highlight. Many natural history items depict local and exotic wildlife.

Access: The Museum is open on Saturdays from midday to 3 pm. Level access from the car park and railway platform is suitable for wheelchairs. Note wheelchair access is to the ground floor only.  The main entrance is at the rear of the building behind the station platform.

Admission is Adults $8, Children $1. Donations are welcome.
