The Capital of Architecture: How Copenhagen reinvents Urban Development in Ørestad

Designed to LEED Platinum standard, Copenhagen Towers encapsulates sustainable architecture at its best. This 22-story office tower and the low-rise building are joined together by an atrium filled with lush greens and a forest of olive trees. Here, visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack. Copenhagen Towers embraces the idea of an innovative, creative, and progressive workplace that also meets the strictest environmental criteria.

With its glass ceiling, the atrium provides the ideal micro-climate for the trees while guests can enjoy the natural beauty of the greenery and relaxing ambiance all year round. The floor provides a curve of wooden benches ending up in an exit to the urban center of Ørestad.

An interesting feature of Copenhagen Towers is its use of up-cycled materials. The Danish upcycling specialist Lendager Group has contributed to the impressive space by implementing a PET plastic-free ceiling and materials such as locally re-used timber wall cladding and concrete flooring. The venue has Denmark’s first groundwater-based heating and cooling system, and together with a renewable energy system of solar panels, the building uses up to 45% less energy than a normal building of its type.

The office building is 85 meters tall and designed by international design firm, Foster & Partners. The other tower is inhabited by Denmark’s first CO2-neutral hotel, Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers – a four-star property designed by Danish architecture firm, Dissing + Weitling and Norman Foster in London.

The Danish architects Lendager Group is behind the fascinating project, Resource Rows, which was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2022.


The Resource Rows is a housing project utilizing upcycled bricks and waste wood. Here, you’ll find a recycled concrete beam used as a bridge and old waste wood and windows used as rooftop community gardens. So simple yet so innovative – the housing project saves as much as 29% CO2 by upcycling only 10% of all building materials!

Take a walk around the rows and experience a different way of living. The 92 flats and rowhouses show us that it’s possible to live more sustainably – also on a social level - without compromising on costs and aesthetics.

Resource Rows

1,200 students, a sports hall, and a public swimming pool are what you’ll find at the brand New School at Hannemanns Allé in Ørestad boasting an impressive 17.500 square meters. The project, which has been several years, is a big investment in the area – an investment that’ll benefit both families and locals of all ages. The highly sustainable elementary school (DGNB Gold certification) was built by the general contractor BAM Danmark together with Rubow Architects, Nøhr & Sigsgaard Architects, and Rambøll. Materials used are wood, glass, etc. The school is set to open in August 2023.

Skolen på Hannemanns Allé

This 5-floor elementary school was designed by Danish architects Lundgaard & Tranberg. The building from 2018 is created in a circular shape with a sports hall in the middle, which adds an open and innovative expression. 181 pupils are scattered over 5 floors with a view of the neighboring area, including large green areas, a playground, and a football track. There’s plenty of room for both learning and fun at this school, which is interesting to observe from the outside as well as from the inside if one gets the chance.

Kalvebod Fælled Skole

Designed for concerts and international sports events, the Royal Arena is a cultural lighthouse in Ørestad. Boasting 35,000 square meters and designed by architectural firm 3XN, the arena is easy to recognize with its curvy wooden fins and minimalistic Nordic expression that blends well into the surroundings. The angled, acoustic walls and flat ceiling create the perfect ambiance and experience for visitors, whether they’re viewing a concert, a football match, or a cultural performance. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of snacks and beverages from the in-house café – or enjoy a hearty meal in one of the area’s restaurants. Come here to enjoy the splendid architecture, the views, and – if you’re lucky enough – a performance. It’s certainly something you won’t forget.

Royal Arena
