This Grade 3 walking trail offers a chance to immerse yourself in ecosystems of both land and sea.

As you walk along the Munjip Trail you will see an amazing landscape of geology, flora, fauna and cultural heritage. You’ll also find artwork and stories of the Walbunja People, members of the oldest continual culture in the world. "Munjip" translates to "walking together, let’s go" in the local dhurga language.

While the trail is suitable for most ages and fitness levels, some bushwalking experience is recommended. Tracks may have short, steep hilly sections, rough walking surfaces and many steps.

The walk passes through a variety of landscapes including remnant bushland, bays, beaches, headlands, and rock platforms. Along the way you’ll discover striking views of the coastline, beaches and bays, peaceful places from which to look out to sea and artworks that encourage you to look within.

Munjip Trail

Before you start the journey, enjoy the spectacular panoramic views from the viewing platform. The view to the west stretches up the Clyde River and to Batemans Bay and to the northeast the Tollgate Islands dominate the horizon.

Observation Point -  Northern Trailhead

The sensational views from this lookout are of the Denhams embayment and south toward Wimbie Beach and eastward to the Tollgate Islands.

Mural - Connection to country, land and sea 

The mural depicts the food sources that have been traditionally gathered at Observation Point, and black cockatoos looking over the south coast as they have for hundreds of years.

Leanne Brook is a featured artist for the Munjip Trail signage.

Leanne is a proud Murramarang woman of the Yuin Nation, born in Milton and has lived on Yuin Country her entire life. Her grandmother's native language is dhurga. As a mixed media artist and digital storyteller, Leanne's work reflects a deep connection to Country and culture.

A detail from mirida (white-bellied sea eagle), a totem of the trail is featured on this sign. Leanne’s commissioned artwork is shown on the trail head entry signs, and captures a breeding pair of mirida performing an aerial display over Caseys Beach and Observation Point, grasping claws and spiraling down toward the ground. The image also highlights the bidhudhu blooms (coastal wattle), which lightly perfume the air along the trail during spring. The warigala (mullet) run is a common sight and bimbulla (pipis) and bidhanga (oysters) are in abundance.

Installation: Picnic Shelter Privacy Screen

*Approximate distance: 1.8kms from Northern trailhead and 13.6kms from Southern Trailhead*

Take a break at the picnic shelter on the beach at the carpark and enjoy the views over Sunshine Cove. The patterned privacy screen on the picnic shelter was designed by Timeika Reena Slockee.

Continue south up the headland for a high vantage point overlooking the bay.

There is a small carpark, accessed from Beach Road.

Denhams Beach

The southern headland of Sunshine Bay is raised high above the rocky coast. From here you can look north-west to see the coastline back toward Sunshine Cove (commonly called Sunshine Bay) and Snapper Island. Lying to the northeast are the iconic Tollgate Islands, a natural island formation that rises from the ocean like sentinels marking the entrance to the protected waters of Batemans Bay.

Lookout - Sunshine Bay southern headland

Parking is available at the northern trailhead at Observation Point. Before you head off on your hike, take a moment to walk the short distance to the viewing platform. Take in the spectacular 180 degree views spanning from west back toward Batemans Bay and east to the Tollgate Islands.

The nearest toilet amenities at Caseys Beach North.

Tucked away in quiet suburbia, Denhams Beach offers a sense of seclusion in the middle of this popular holiday area. It is the first of the surfing beaches to the south of Batemans Bay, popular with beginners. Denhams Beach is sheltered by a prominent rocky headland to the north and rocky outcrop to the south. The tranquil bay around to the left hand side is a great spot for snorkelling. There is a carpark at the northern end of the beach which is accessed from Graydon Avenue. Cold water shower available. No toilets or change rooms.
