In Benidorm, not everything is monumental. Beyond its skyscrapers and large beaches, there are tranquil corners hiding small paradises. To the north of the city, the coves Cala del Tío Ximo and Cala Almadrava welcome those seeking peace, a dip, or basking in the sun among the rocks. Moreover, if you feel like strolling, there’s a stretch of the coastal promenade that coincides with the old town and ends at Cala de Mal Pas. Not far away, in the Serra Gelada Natural Park, 300-meter ravines and underwater caverns teeming with vegetation and local species dot the path to the Albir lighthouse.

Coves, caverns, and ravines

Enjoy eating out in Benidorm in the town’s historic quarter with the tapas, pintxos and wine in the style of northern Spain. Los Vascos is a small area containing numerous restaurants and bars with a varied and delicious array of food options. You can also immerse yourself in its very enjoyable and almost family-like atmosphere, where the eateries’ outdoor seating areas merge together.

The oenological tradition in Alicante dates back to the 6th century BC. The Enrique Mendoza winery has continued this almost sacred practice, harnessing the peculiarities of the climate of l’Alfàs del Pi, which feeds its vineyards with sea breezes, soft light, and calcareous soil. If you’re interested in oenotourism, during your visit you can learn about all stages of the process, from field treatment, bottling, and conservation in the underground cellar, to the final tasting.

The millennia-old tradition winery

If you love the spectacular views and like to feel that the sea is yours, you have to visit a viewpoint known as the Mirador de Benidorm, which hundreds of years ago was a fortress used to look out for incoming boats. In the 19th century, it was invaded by French troops and later left abandoned by Napoleonic troops, leaving the fortress empty. But it was not until the war of independence, when the English fleet knocked down the building, that it then became what it is today - one of the most emblematic viewing platforms in Benidorm. If you enjoy looking out over the town in a more peaceful setting, you can always go to the alternative lookout points of Mirador de la Cruz or Mirador de Cierra Cortina, from where you will enjoy views not only of Benidorm but also of its neighbouring villages.

Views of the Mediterranean Sea

Everyone knows about Benidorm’s salty water, but few know about its freshwater counterpart. Just a few kilometres away from the city, in the heart of Callosa d’en Sarrià, rises a system of waterfalls connected by water channels that create an unusual natural sight in the area. However, a word of warning to visitors: as it’s a tributary of the river emanating from the mountain, the water of the Al- gar Springs is usually much colder than the sea, but it’s easily overcome with a countdown and a quick dive.

The Algar Springs

In eastern Spain, very near Benidorm, is one of the most important locations for contemporary pottery and ceramics: Agost. This local community houses numerous artisanal workshops going back many generations which defend the art of crafting by hand as a treasure worth protecting. The local white clay, drawn from neighbouring quarries, has distinct features which allow the water inside to remain fresh, something which makes Agost’s ceramic products unique.
