What was once a tiny food stall by the side of the road is now a Bali legend, thanks to its founder, Made Tandjung. From nasi goreng (fried rice) to gado-gado (salad), every dish is an authentic taste of Bali. Try the nasi campur (mixed rice), which features steamed rice with a range of sides, typically chicken skewers, a fried egg, prawn crackers, veggies and more. It's a favourite local dish, eaten from breakfast through to a late-night supper. 

The Kuta location, a 10-minute walk from Mercure Kuta Bali, is where it all started. There are also four other branches across the island. Look out for live entertainment at the Seminyak branch, including Balinese dancing, rindik (a bamboo xylophone) music and even salsa nights. There's also a shop selling local artisans' products, as well as a spa.

The region is one of spectacular natural beauty with the majestic Mount Batur volcano dominating the landscape. Perched on a hillside, Montana Del Cafe is famous for its international cuisine with fusion twists. Some of the specialities include truffle fries, mujair base lalah (fried fish with a spicy tomato sauce) and tiramisu. Montana Del Cafe is particularly popular for breakfast and brunch, and its specialty coffee.

The cafe is spacious, spreading across two levels with both indoor and outdoor seating options. Try to get a table on the lower level, as these have the best views of the surrounding landscape. Early riser? Montana Del Cafe opens at 6am, so you can enjoy a morning artisan coffee and spectacular sunrise views.

"Ayam" means chicken, while "betutu" refers to the way the meat is prepared – marinated in spices and slow-cooked until tender. This family-run warung (small eatery) is known for its fresh, reasonably priced food. Its signature dish is a thick slab of fish – usually snapper or mackerel – seasoned, deep-fried and served with a fiery sambal (chili paste) that packs a serious punch. It's crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Add some steamed rice and a light, flavourful broth made with the fish head, and you'll end up with a meal that is a great example of straightforward, fresh Indonesian cooking.

Visitors don't come for fancy decor – the setting is simple, with basic tables and an open-air kitchen – but for its time-tested flavours. The sambal paste, in particular, is a family recipe that's been handed down for generations.
