Millthorpe Garden Ramble 2025

We moved from our farm on acreage on the outskirts of Millthorpe to a bare block in the village in April 2024. We built a new home and commenced designing and planting our garden.

The house design incorporates a protected courtyard area and as we are on a corner block, we were fortunate enough to extend our garden onto the verge. Our plant selection consists of standard roses, magnolias, rhododendrons, azaleas, and a dogwood.

Our established country garden was in the Ramble several years ago. We are very happy to now share our brand new village garden.

“Methleigh” is a circa 1878 bluestone home set in two acres of gardens in Millthorpe.

Many hedges of Viburnum, Pittosporum, Photinia, Cherry Laurel, Teucrium and Buxus break up the garden. Three very special trees in the garden are an English oak, a cedar of Lebanon and a bunya pine, which may date back to the 1800s. Perennial garden beds surrounding the house showcase mixed plantings of lavender, grasses, gaura and agapanthus. There are also some lovely old eucalypt trees and areas of native plantings.

A large vegetable garden surrounded by raspberry bushes grows strawberries, zucchini, eggplant, pumpkins, tomatoes and herbs. It is a very liveable garden with a large deck off the house and two firepit areas, as well as picnic spots under the large trees.

“The Old Bakery” Millthorpe is a rustic and charming building dating back to the 1890s, which housed the town’s bakery until the 1940s.

It is surrounded by established cottage gardens, with exquisite iceberg roses, which in spring are a delight to behold.

A paved upper terrace is now a quaint dining space, perfect for enjoying a cup of tea in the sunshine.

The Old Bakery and its gardens are soul food, a nourishing and restorative space to enjoy all year round.

26 Park Street

Through a white picket fence, this charming garden winds beside a welcoming federation home. It offers a delightful blend of cottage-style planting and Australian native flora, with an ever-changing tapestry of colour, ground plantings, cool climate textures and a wide variety of rose cultivars.

A central alfresco courtyard features two young maple trees that will grow to offer dappled shade and seasonal colour. Birdsong accompanies visitors throughout the garden, with native plantings thoughtfully chosen to attract and support local birdlife.

At the rear of the garden stands a magnificent Tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera); its striking blooms draw the eye and anchor the surrounding landscape.

Our little garden in the centre of Millthorpe was well established before we moved here six years ago. We particularly appreciate the wonderful roses which line our south-facing frontage. We have a lovely dogwood tree there, with masses of daffodils, jonquils and bluebells putting on a great display in late winter and spring.

The backyard garden is on two levels, with the lower courtyard featuring a vertical herb garden while the upper level has a small lawn area surrounded by various vines.

An unusual feature is the large horse chestnut tree growing in the garage and emerging through the roof. We are also fortunate to have a vegetable garden next door on Pilcher Street.

The gardens at “Rosebank” surround an historic Bank of NSW building, completed in 1901. The garden developed later on the site of the ‘dump’.

The array of roses that frames the building on Victoria and Park Streets is a feature, flowering for around six months of the year. The spacious gardens feature secluded alcoves, open spaces, paths of discovery, and a sculpture garden with unique pieces among magnificent mature trees. Plantings include maples, camellias, bulbs and annuals.

The verandas overlooking the garden wrap around the building, providing a peaceful place to enjoy the gardens for much of the year.
