The canal district is a buzzing area where you can marvel over historical buildings aligning with the famous canals of Amsterdam. Connecting the canals, there are several small streets, which over the years became home to some of the nicest vintage and designer boutiques, typical Amsterdam cafes and popular lunchrooms. De 9 Straatjes are best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, but be careful not to leave the sidewalk while admiring the old picturesque houses and places to go to, as these streets are also used by cycling locals and suppliers delivering all kinds of goodies to the bars, restaurants and coffee shops (yes, also the ones actually selling only coffee). One of our favourite shops is Zipper to hunt for some proper vintage treasures, or head to Laura Dols if you are looking for 50s vibes.

The Vondelpark was designed and built in 1850 as a green spot where people can walk their dog. Nowadays residents still walk their dog here, but the park also attracts a wider audience, such as groups of friends barbecuing, people jogging, locals rushing to work or children playing in one of the many playgrounds. During Covid-19 the park also became a very popular spot for first (Tinder)dates. We recommend starting your day at the park with a long walk (don’t miss out on the beautiful rose garden) before having a nice lunch at one of the cafes scattered over the area. Then head to the open-air theatre. If you’re lucky you might catch an impromptu show or concert. Want some culture too? Just outside of the park, on the west side, you can visit the Vondelkerk (Vondel Church) or the oldest riding school in Amsterdam, the Hollandsche Manege.

A’dam Lookout is an observation deck with an unparalleled panoramic view of Amsterdam, located just across the water from Central Station on the North side of the city. The tower was formally known as the Shell tower, as it was built on behalf of the oil company in 1966. Nowadays it houses offices, restaurants and bars and the observation deck A’dam Lookout. This is no place for the fainthearted since you will be standing a 100 metres above the ground. Sounds like a joke to you? Then try 'Over The Edge’, Europe's highest swing. Daredevils and thrill seekers swing back and forth over the edge of the tower with Amsterdam under their feet.

Not scared of heights? Head to A’dam Lookout

Wynand Fockink is one of the oldest distilleries in Amsterdam, producing top-notch liqueurs, genevers and brandies since the 17th century. Nothing has changed since then, including the tasting room, so you almost literally take a step back in time. Among the various liqueurs they serve, you will find many old-fashioned Dutch variations, such as Volmaakt Geluk (Perfect Bliss) and our favourite, Hansje in de Kelder (Jack in the Cellar). Inside you are surrounded by wooden panels and stools, a historic bar and a glimpse of the old times in the capital of The Netherlands. The tasting room, which houses a very special collection of antique bottles, still maintains the tradition of bowing for the first sip because of the way they pour the drinks into a small glass, just enough to fill the whole thing so you have to sip the first nip of the little ‘borrelglaasje’. Can you, without spilling a drop?

Try Dutch liqueurs at Amsterdam’s oldest tasting room

Artis is not only a zoo. It’s also a botanical garden, there is a planetarium and a microbe museum. This place is perfect for adventurers, young and old, who like to explore the lives of animals. Artis is the oldest zoo of The Nederlands and one of the oldest in the world, so almost every little Amsterdammer visited the place when they were young. Once inside, coming through the impressive gates with golden eagles on top, you almost instantly bump into the monkey rock, where chimpanzees often show their acrobatic tricks and their fruit-washing skills before eating it with their little hands. Artis is a great place for a family day out and in summer the zoo opens late on Saturdays for music, special tours and one-off performances. You can even order a picnic or barbecue in advance!
