Goetheturm, named after the great German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, is a wooden observation tower on the edge of the Frankfurt city forest. For the people of Frankfurt, the tower acts as a landmark of the city, and it offers a breath-taking view of the Frankfurt skyline and the forest below. We recommend heading up early in the morning or when the sun goes down, when the light hits the city from aside, creating mesmerising shadows and landscapes.

One of the places that has a lot of significance to Frankfurt is Paulskirche (St. Paul’s Church). It is now called “House of all Germans”, but its important political symbolism dates back to 1848 when the Frankfurt Parliament convened here. Nowadays the former Protestant church serves as a location for several award ceremonies, such as the Goethe Prize, concerts and art exhibitions. Inside the church, you can learn all about the fascinating history of this astonishing building. Like the fact it was the first structure in Frankfurt that was rebuilt after the Second World War. The preferential treatment was a tribute to its symbolism of freedom and as the cradle of Germany. This place is the perfect location for people looking for a historical experience for their trip.

Visit the House of all Germans: Paulskirche

Have an Äppelwoi at one of the bars if you want to experience Frankfurter locality. Äppelwoi is the regional name for apple wine, which they love to drink. It’s similar to cider but somewhat sweeter and stronger.

The typical bars and cafés offer an array of wines made from the best apples, like the long-running Apfelwein Solzer. Do you like the drink? Then head back when the bi-weekly market settles down at the clock tower on Berger Straße, the lifeline of the district stretching from Nordend to Seckbach. At the market, you will definitely find a bottle of your favourite fruity wine and other Frankfurter specialities, or go for a Handkäs mit Musik (hand cheese with music) at one of the restaurants. Handkäs is a round, handmade cheese, generally served in vinegar and oil. “Mit Musik” means it is served with chopped onions. This is Frankfurt at its best!

Have an apple wine at Bornheim

This 4.42-hectare long riverside city park is one of the largest southern gardens north of the Alps open to the public. It’s filled with Mediterranean flair, palm trees, cistus, fig trees, lavender, sage, and lemon trees. All thanks to the southern exposure, the lee of the quay walls and the sunlight reflected from the river causing exotic plants to thrive in a Mediterranean microclimate. Why not buy some lovely things to eat and drink, bring a blanket and find a nice green spot surrounded by the Med for an unforgettable picnic? We would! You find Nizza Park between the bridges Friedensbrücke and Untermainbrücke.

Combine Frankfurt and Nice at Nizza-Ufer

The Dom-Römer-Quartier is a new quarter in the heart of Frankfurt that brings new life to the city's historic centre. The Neue Altstadt harbours small alleyways, romantic squares, picturesque courtyards and grand patricians' houses. Some of the new buildings are reconstructed true to the original houses so the atmosphere is still the same as it was before the new developments began in 2014. Our favourite thing to do in the area is to shop at one of the many little stores or have a drink in a cosy Frankfurter café. The Dom-Römer-Quartier offers plenty of space to relax, enjoy and discover.

Admire the old and new at Neue Altstadt

Especially during sundown, the Eiserner Steg unveils stunning views over the skyline of “Mainhattan”. The famous iron and concrete footbridge connects the city centre and Römerberg with Sachsenhausen on the southern banks of the river Main and is crossed by over 10,000 pedestrians every day. You won’t be alone, but the bridge and river radiate some sort of calmness, especially when you decide to explore the surroundings and use the Eiserner Steg as starting and ending point for a nice walk alongside the Main river. We especially love to just take a stroll, immerse ourselves in local life and watch the birds and people passing by.
