The Spirit of Tehuana - Photo Location Trail

Installed at this site in 1931, the poppet head was originally used at the Garden Gully United mine.

During the gold rush, Camp Hill was visible from all of Bendigo so it was used as a spot to hoist flags indicating that mail had arrived in town. 

The Bendigo Heritage Mosaic depicts Bendigo's mining history and sits at the foot of the lookout, designed to be viewed from above.

Poppet Head Lookout

This version of the Beehive Building was completed in 1872 by architect Charles Webb. At that time Bendigo's goldrush was in full swing, and mining was central to the economy.

Sharebrokers had their offices on the first floor of the building. In the 1880s, a busy day on the exchange could see 2000 stock traders at work in the building and up to 5000 shareholders who would gather to monitor their stocks.

One of the most beautiful features of the building is the central pitched glass roof and ornamental ironwork, which is compared with Charles Webb's treatment of the Royal Arcade in Melbourne.

The property has seen many uses since its days as a mining exchange, including a variety of retail outlets and upstairs offices. One of the Beehive Building's most notable retailers was Allan's Music, which purchased the building in 1927 and constructed ground floor shops to create Allan's Walk.

After falling into disrepair the Bendigo Beehive has been closed to the public for many years. It has recently been restored to capture its former glory and place in history.

## Trash Cult

The term “**trash culture**” entered into common use from the ’80s to indicate artistic or entertainment expressions considered to be of a low cultural profile but able to stimulate and attract the audiences.

It refers to books, movies, TV shows, etc. characterized by poor taste, vulgar themes, and subjects chosen to attract the audience through shoddy, low-quality, and culturally impoverished content.

In this sense, trash culture is defined as the validation of the voyeuristic sight of the middle class which approaches the popular culture as style of consumption.
