Located in the Armorica Regional National Park, Huelgoat Forest (Breton for “high woods”) is the birthplace of a number of Celtic legends. It features picturesque masses of rounded boulders. You might recognize the shapes that many are named for (a cauldron, an umbrella, a bed, and so on). Some of them are quite well-known. Will you be able to sway Trembling Rock, precariously balanced at more than 100 tons? Or perhaps you’ll stumble across the famous treasure that Merlin the Wizard entrusted to the woodland spirits?

The magical Huelgoat Forest

The 2024 edition of the Fête médiévale du Pays de Grand-Fougeray is based on the theme "Ballets d'esclaffes" (festive hilarity). Watch an aerial ballet suspended from Duguesclin Tower, equestrian jousting and dressage events, a nautical jousting tournament, an “electro-medieval” concert, and enchanting nighttime illuminations... This year will be peppered with references to the Olympics, with five giant wood games crafted for the occasion, requiring strength, dexterity and speed. August 23rd to 25th.

The Medieval Festival of Pays de Grand-Fougeray

A training or official club jersey, socks, a keychain, a mug... Whatever your budget, there’s something for you. The En avant Guingamp soccer club boutique is a must-see in this Côtes d'Armor town. Founded in 1912, the Ligue 2 club skyrocketed in the 1970s. Players’ achievements on the field brought a huge media buzz to the club of this small Breton commune. The outstanding team won the French Cup in 2009 and 2014. The shop is open Tuesdays to Saturdays.

The En Avant de Guingamp soccer club shop

Take a walk from the Sainte-Barbe Oratory, where you can even ring the bell! Then go down the majestic staircase leading to the chapel, built into the rock itself. This truly superb site overlooks the Ellé River. Built around the 16th century, the chapel is worth the detour. Its vault is in stone, without beams. A little farther along you might visit the “fountain of devotion.” Legend has it that if a single young lady were to throw a round-tipped hairpin into it, she would surely be married within the year. Open in the mid-season from Tuesdays to Sundays and every day of the summer from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Surprising Sainte-Barbe Chapel in Le Faouët

Discover the Breton version of Easter Island at the Valley of Saints. These huge statues – each standing at 13 to 22 ft – represent the founding saints of Brittany. Facing the black mountains and the Monts d’Arrée, the spot already features 200 granite statues sculpted by 40 artists from all over the world. The site will celebrate its 15th anniversary this year. Admission is free, all year round, all day, every day!  Guided tours are also available.

The Valley of Saints

Since 1984, the Duchess of Rohan has welcomed visitors of the Château de Josselin to visit her husband’s collection of antique dolls and toys. This is the largest private collection of its kind in France! It includes nearly five million pieces, with the oldest dating back to the 17th century. Some of the dolls are dressed in Breton costumes; others are precious antiques from Japan. The gardens and castle are also open to the public, overlooking the Nantes-Brest canal. Open April to October.
