Two wheels are your passport to Eurobodalla’s many paths, tracks and trails – BYO or hire one when you get here.

Ride to the beach, shops and out for lunch with almost 400kms of easy pathways and trails along the coast and through villages and towns. You’ll find viewing platforms with places to picnic, and spot whales and other wildlife, or simply enjoy the view.

Mountain bike through one of many National Park and State Forests trails where every turn on the trail is a new adventure and discovery. State forests provide a natural bushland for a range of recreational trail use including mountain bike riding, four-wheel driving, horse riding and cross country running. You will find long and spectacular trails with smooth gravel and technical mountain trails perfect for down-hilling, and the Spotted Gum Trail north of Batemans Bay is 24 kilometres of easy to moderate cycling through a magical forest and its native bird population.

For those wanting a more leisurely pace, there’s plenty of cycling experiences waiting for you. You will see route numbers on cycling signage in Eurobodalla to help you navigate. Two easy favourites are from Broulee to North Head – a great flat route with a mixture of shared pathway and sand or gravel track through beautiful Bengello forest – and the scenic stretch on a shared concrete path from Narooma to Dalmeny following the shores of Wagonga Inlet, the Pacific Ocean and Mummuga Lake.

Cycling

Wander along a short and easy walking track and within a few steps you’ll arrive at the secluded beauty of Richmond Beach. Ideal for families, it provides protection from most onshore winds and makes for a peaceful day at the beach.

Surrounded by forest, there are plenty of shady spots to throw down a picnic rug and enjoy a picnic in a stunning natural setting. Bring your fishing gear and try your luck fishing from the beach, or go swimming and snorkelling in the sparkling blue waters.

With more than 90 species of birdlife in Murramarang, this is also a great spot for birdwatching. Wander along the foreshore and see how many species you can see. Catch a glimpse of gannets flying over the waters or watch the sooty oystercatchers fossicking along the shoreline.

Richmond Beach

Ride along the scenic river flats with grazing cattle that glimpse Moruya River and into the ocean at Moruya Head with this easy ride. Park at Riverside Park, Church Street or you can start upstream at the Moruya Water Garden, River St. This section is connected by a good shared cycleway. Head east along South Head Road on the pathway. The road generally follows the Moruya River. Take care when the cycleway crosses to the other side of the road and take added care where the cycleway merges with the road. Turn left into Charles Moffitt Drive. Once at the Surf Club you can extend the journey (1.5km return) up the hill to the headland where you can check out the Historic Cemetery and a great whale watching spot.

Ready, set, go... And make sure you take a map with you on this journey along one of the South Coast’s most scenic routes as there are wonderful opportunities to explore coastal villages with magnificent rocky and sandy bays. This route is only recommended for experienced riders and although a sealed road route, it is lacking in decent shoulders in places and carries traffic where the speed limit is 100km/hr for long sections. Start at Corrigans Beach Reserve opposite the shops at Batehaven. Follow the coast along Beach Rd past Surfbeach down to the junction with George Bass Drive at Wimbie Beach. You head south on George Bass Drive past Mosquito Bay, Malua Bay, and McKenzies Beach, all with views of the ocean. At around 13km into the ride South Rosedale and at 15km Guerrilla Bay are two lovely beach stops. Turn off to Mossy Point (19km) and follow the road through to Broulee. Re-join George Bass Drive and keep heading south. At the southern end of the airport you have a chance to view the entrance of the Moruya River to the Ocean. Follow North Head Drive into Moruya and take care as there are some sections that have very limited shoulders and sharp bends. Follow the scenic Moruya River all the way into Moruya. You can now wander the back streets of Moruya. If you arrive on Saturday visit Moruya Country Markets past the swimming pool at Riverside Park.

The Bay and Beyond

Enjoy the salty air as you ride along the foreshore cycle path from bustling Batehaven and Batemans Bay, then cross the bay bridge to the north side to explore the tranquil wetlands of Cullendulla Creek Boardwalk. Start at the reserve opposite the shops, Batehaven. Follow the shared path past Birdland and the marina into Batemans Bay looping over the break-wall. Continue to Batemans Bay, and the picturesque Murra Mia Walkway sharing the path with walkers and sightseers. After crossing bridge to the north side on the footpath your ride continues eastwards into Surfside, eventually reaching the end of Myamba Parade, where you join the boardwalk around to Cullendulla Beach. The return is via the same route.

The Mangrove Tour

Take in spectacular coastal and lake views and feel the majesty and peace of the magical spotted gums as you ride through these forests. To find one of the best whale-viewing platforms in the area once at North Head go through the camp ground to the walking track. Start at the Durras Sports Ground; head north through the village to Durras Lake boat ramp, then along the lake foreshore along a track in front of the caravan park. It then heads back through the village streets to the ocean boat ramp. Next is a journey through the forest to North Head with great views of the Tollgate Islands and Batemans Bay beyond. The return follows a similar route back to the village.

Spotted Gum Trail

Get away from it all and escape to this beautiful, isolated beach for the day.  Surround yourself with natural bushland and revel in the sounds of birdsong on Myrtle Beach walking track. This easy walk takes you through what the locals call the ‘enchanted forest’, an incredible display of stunted spotted gum forest that have been warped and twisted by the salt air and coastal winds. Before you know it, you’ll step onto sandy shores and be surrounded by the high cliffs of Myrtle Beach. Pack a picnic and spend the afternoon picnicking with the sounds of the ocean behind you. Take a dip in the pristine waters and enjoy swimming, snorkelling and surfing. Or bring your fishing rod and unwind as you enjoy birdwatching with fishing rod in hand. Keep your eyes out for sea eagles and peregrine falcons soaring overhead. You might even spot a kangaroos passing on the beach.

Myrtle Beach walking track

Honeysuckle Beach walking track is a great short hike in the southern end of Murramarang National Park, just north of Batemans Bay. It’s an ideal walk for people wanting to take in the awe inspiring views of the south coast while avoiding the crowds.

Leading through wind-sculpted spotted gums to the lookout, gaze across to the picturesque islands. Ideal for birdwatching, the white-breasted sea eagles are known to scour the nearby ocean for fish. Arriving at black-pebbled Honeysuckle, keep an eye out for gannets, shearwaters and petrels out to sea, or the threatened sooty oystercatcher foraging on the rocks.

Cool off with a swim in the crystal clear waves and roll out the blanket for a picnic on the sand. If you want to try your hand at fishing, you might catch whiting, tailor or snapper (this is part of a marine park, so please check restrictions). When you’re ready, head back along the track and if you want to extend your stay, pitch your tent at North Head campground.

Honeysuckle Beach Walking Track

Enjoy a relaxing day away on this remote beach in Murramarang National Park, on the South Coast. Dark Beach walking track leads through spotted gum forest to a unique cove where adventurous holiday-makers will enjoy swimming, fishing and exploring the unique rock shelves.

Along Dark Beach walking track you’ll see unique rock formations and a band of volcanic rock, with white sand on one side and black sand on the other. Look for fossils in the rocks, enjoy a quiet beach picnic or cool off with a dip in the crystal clear waters.

If you prefer a more active holiday bring your gear for fishing, surfing and snorkelling, or continue along Murramarang coastal walk. You might see dolphins frolicking amongst the waves or whales during their annual migration.

Broulee Island Nature Reserve Walk

A great off the beaten track hike, Oaky Beach walking track leads through gums and rainforest to a secluded beach in the southern area of Murramarang National park. Only a short drive north of Batemans Bay, near North Head campground, you could be forgiven for thinking you were miles from civilisation.

The track snakes through a stand of towering lilly pillies, which burst with edible pink berries in the warmer months. Crossing a grassy clearing and a stand of she-oaks, keep an eye out for swamp wallabies and lyrebirds. Passing through a swamp gully, you might hear the unmistakable call of the eastern whipbird before emerging at the beach.

If you’re lucky, it might just be you and the oystercatchers on the beach. Cool off with a swim, try a spot of fishing or simply unpack the picnic basket and sit back and enjoy the rugged beauty of the unspoilt coastline.

Oaky Beach Walking Track

Start at in Heath Street at the surf club then turn into Lytle Street and veer into McNee Street until you engage the old road – a track that hugs the sand dunes for a few kilometres and that is now quite vegetated and rough in parts. The turnaround point is the northern end of the airport runway at the windsock. You can continue riding down to the Moruya River mouth by riding along the airport fence on the ocean side of the runway. This is a difficult sandy grass track and you may have to walk in places. Retrace your path to Broulee. You then ride along the foreshore of the village on the cycle path. At the northern end of the village you cross Candlagan Creek and re-join the road. Turn right and follow the road that runs around the Mossy Point foreshore until you come to the access road to the headland. Here is a great headland view. A right turn will take you to the café in Mossy Point at Pacific Street. Your return journey to the Surf Club is very similar to the outward journey.

Moruya Country Market

This ride follows the glorious Deua River to the historic village of Araluen; a rich gold mining past and known for its lovely orchards and fruit. The road is mainly gravel. Start from anywhere in Moruya but a good start point is along Campbell Street, west of the Eurobodalla Shire Council building. Head west and follow the signs to Araluen. Take care on blind bends and oncoming traffic as the road narrows where vehicles may encroach on your side of the roadway. This route is extremely scenic with great mountain views and proximity to the river and there are many places to picnic along the way. The Hotel in Araluen can be a turn-around point for the long ride back. Or, stay overnight at one of the camp grounds before returning the next day.
